Taxes - 1864 - Internal Revenue Act of 1864:

Taxes were raised again in 1864 to generate revenue for the Civil War effort by the Union.  This increase was made through the Internal Revenue Act of 1864.  The effect of the act was to create an additional tax bracket, and to change the existing brackets.

0% - Incomes under $600 per year ($7,942.22 in 2006 dollars)

5% - Incomes between $600 and $5,000 per year ($7,942.22 and $66,185.16 in 2006 dollars)

7.5% - Incomes between $5,000 and $10,000 per year($66,185.16 and $132,370.32 in 2006 dollars)

10% - Incomes over $10,000 per year ($132,370.32 in 2006 dollars)
